Roulette – The Basics

Roulette is one of the oldest casino games around and is probably the easiest to learn. It is played on a table with a large black wheel called the Roulette wheel. The wheel is separated by numbers between 0 to 36 and the numbers are alternately coloured black or red except the number 0 which is green.

Betting in Roulette takes place before the wheel has been spun. There will be a cloth on the table with marked boxes and numbers, this is for players to place their stake in the appropriate box according to the bet they want to place.

Details of Play

There are three variations of Roulette, American, European and French. The rules are explained below:

European Roulette

A variety of bets can be placed which can be modified at any time up until the Roulette wheel has been spun. The different types of bets include, betting on individual numbers or different combinations of numbers.

The main bets are:

Straight Bets – this is a bet on a single number and offers odds of 35 to 1

Split Bets – this is a bet on two adjacent numbers offering odds of 17 to 1

Street Bets – this is a bet on 3 numbers in a horizontal line offering odds of 11 to 1

Square Bets – this is a bet on a block of 4 numbers offering odds of 8 to 1

Line Bets – this is a bet on 6 numbers comprising of 2 adjacent lines offering odds of 5 to 1

Column Bets – this is a bet on one of 3 vertical columns offering odds of 2 to 1

Dozen Bets – this is a bet on 12 numbers which can be high, middle or low offering odds of 2 to 1

High or Low Bet – this is a bet on either the high or low 18 numbers offering odds of 1 to 1 (‘Evens’)

Even Bets - this is any bet on even/odd, red/black and low/high numbers offering odds of 1 to 1 (‘Evens’)

You can also bet on the section called the Racetrack. This is the oval shape, which copies the numbers on the wheel. These are called Neighbour (or ‘Voisin’) bets. You can quickly place a group of bets on single numbers.

If the ball lands on the green 0, any stakes with ‘evens’ bets will be lost.

French Roulette

The main difference between European and French Roulette is the green 0 pocket. If the ball lands in this space, only half the stake is lost rather than the full amount as in its European Counterpart. This is known as ‘La Partage’

American Roulette

The main difference in American Roulette is the addition of the 00 (or double zero) pocket on the wheel.

The odds are not as favourable as European and French Roulette because of the addition but as in French Roulette, only half the stake is lost if the ball lands on either the 0 or 00 pockets.

There is also an additional bet called the 5 bet in which a bet can be placed on the following five numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 offering odds of 6-1.
